Bear Pride 98

Toronto's Gay & Lesbian Pride Day was blessed with the presence of many
cuddly bears involved in the Bear Pride Float 1998. The float was put
together with my help and the aid of over 35 bears, friends and admirers,
with a special mention going out to Robert van der Heym, David Gorringe,
Scott Christie, Scott Armstrong, Scott Meikleham and Darryl Harrietha, Jeff
Andrews, Chuck.
The float was a 24 foot by 8 foot flatbed truck. It was led by John
Breithaupt flying the Bear Pride Flag. Next came Gerry
Hughes and another Bear Buddy, each riding a beautifully decorated touring motorcycle, after which
came Jeff Andrews and Chuck carrying an 8 foot wide by 6 foot high,
hand made Bear Pride Flag.
Then came the float! It took many weeks of planning, gathering and
pre-construction. On the flat bed was built a 12 foot by 7 foot rectangular
frame
made of 4"x4" columns and PVC tubing. With some bear ingenuity, we got it
standing on the bed, the day before (Saturday). On Sunday morning
(June 28th 1998) the rest of the assemblage took place. A large 4'x8' "Just
say WOOF" sign was positioned over the cab of the truck. Under the
rectangular structure was placed a picnic table. Around the structure were
placed ceder pine trees. Three flags, the Canadian, Rainbow and Bear,
were affixed to the structure. Then came the 2400 watt mega sound system.
And finally, the cutest 9'x9' inflatable Panda Bear. During the parade,
10 bears rode and romped on the flat bed, while David Gorringe drove.
Around the float, marched many valiant float monitors, keeping all of the
adoring throngs at bay. Behind strode many loyal bear marchers, with a
pride far and wide. We threw "Bear Pride Packs" into the crowd. The
official pack contained 5 gummie bears (in the rainbow colours!), a condom
with an official Bear Pride Float sticker on it, and a packet of lube. What
more could a Bear ask for!
I would like to thank all of the people involved. It was a huge success and
an honourable credit to all involved! Pride day was attended by over half a
million people. Hundreds of thousands watched the parade and cheered us on.
Just think of all of the young bears who got a taste of our warmth.
The city heard our ROAR!
